An Eco-Friendly Way to Clean Linoleum Office Flooring

Commercial grade linoleum is sustainable, durable, timeless, and commonly used in offices. While it has many benefits, excessive moisture can cause it to emit a musty odour. Office cleaning is often overlooked, but there's nothing more distracting when you're trying to work than unpleasant smells permeating your nostrils.

If your linoleum flooring is starting to smell, this environmental friendly cleaning method will diffuse the odour and leave your office fresh and fragrant.

Get Rid of the Dirt

Before you begin, vacuum the floor or sweep up with a dustpan and brush. This will prevent marring when you apply the cleaning solution. Don't ignore those hard-to-reach areas under desks and filing cabinets, as they tend to accumulate dust and debris. If you're faced with any difficult stains or particularly grimy areas, mop them up with warm water or scrub them down with a sponge to loosen the dirt. Wait until the floor is completely dry before continuing.

Create a Cleaning Solution

Mix together one part white distilled vinegar or apple cider vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle. Spray the floor with the cleaning solution and leave it for a minute or two before mopping it up with warm water. Work on one small section of the office at a time. Don't worry if the vinegar starts to smell, as the scent will dissipate quickly. White distilled vinegar will cut through grease without leaving any stains or blemishes when it dries.

Dry the Floor

Drying is the most important step of all. Failure to properly dry linoleum could result in mould and mildew, which not only smells, but can harm the respiratory tract. Open the windows and doors, and use a towel to soak up any excess moisture. Wipe in a circular motion to thoroughly buff the surface and remove the grime. Apply linoleum wax at least once every few months to ensure it retains its sparkle. Pay particular attention to high-traffic areas.

Preventative Maintenance

There's no substitute for preventative maintenance. Before you step into your office, wipe your shoes. Dirt and debris are not only unsightly, but they could scratch the linoleum. Always sweep or vacuum before cleaning to prevent spreading loose dirt around the office. Although it looks and feels similar, linoleum is not as durable as vinyl; therefore, you should always avoid using high PH or abrasive cleaners. Going green is more efficient and environmentally friendly.

If this method still doesn't get your floor as clean you'd like, you can hire a professional office cleaning company to come in and take care of it for you.
