Cement Bonded Asbestos Removal and Disposal

Asbestos use in construction materials has drastically reduced since the 70s. It is rarely found in many construction components as was the case in earlier times. This is because asbestos fiber has been declared a health hazard responsible for several health concerns across the globe. Despite the sharp decline in asbestos use, white asbestos can still be found in certain structures dating as recently as the 90s. White asbestos was used together with cement to create hard sheets and rolls. These can be seen in old garage roofs, shed roofs and even some farm houses. Asbestos cement was also used to make drainpipes, flues, and other water catchment reservoirs.

Asbestos cement is considered stable. It has a small amount of asbestos bonded with cement and does not degrade or easily break. It, however, also requires careful removal and asbestos disposal services. The following should be observed when removing asbestos cement.

When to remove cement asbestos

Asbestos cement does not necessarily have to be removed. These products can last for decades, and the amount of asbestos in them is small. When your structures, however, start growing algae and moss, it is good to remove them. The growth of microorganisms leads to breakage and a further crumbling of asbestos cement. Asbestos cement should also be removed when cracks begin to manifest on the products.

Removal procedure

If you have large areas or amounts of asbestos cement, it may be wise to have contractors remove it. Although asbestos cement is considered more stable and less harmful, a removal and disposal contractor can do the job better and is more equipped. If you decide to do a domestic removal by yourself, you should first and foremost wear protective equipment. A gas mask and protective overalls would pretty much be sufficient. When removing asbestos cement products such as roofing sheets, always try to remove entire sheet lengths, as opposed to breaking pieces out. Breaking asbestos cement may release asbestos fibers into the air.

Asbestos removal experts also advise removing asbestos when it is wet. Consider wetting the surface before removal. The dampness helps in holding the loose dust on the surface. The dust may contain asbestos fiber particles that you don't want to inhale. Wetting of the surface should be done continually throughout the entire removal process. Alternatively, carry out asbestos cement removal on a drizzly day.

Disposal requirements

Once removed, asbestos cement disposal is pretty much as regulated as ordinary asbestos. The ordinary householder is required to dispose of only small amounts of asbestos. For large amounts, however, you will need to hire a contractor for asbestos disposal services. Asbestos cement needs to be packed in tightly sealed double plastic bags that are tough. The bags need to be transported in small amounts, and the transporting vehicle should be one that eliminates the risk of the bag falling. For businesses, asbestos cement removal should be done by properly licensed contractors.
